Tiffin, Ohio

In the 5 years since I lived in Tiffin, Ohio there has been growth, additions and a whole new energy throughout the town. Home to two universities, including my alma mater Heidelberg University, there is a quaintness found among the youthfulness. I’m excited to share with you all the unique experiences you can have while visiting Tiffin, Ohio.

This is a MUST DO. I had the opportunity to do a walk through with the owner, David Spridgeon, and hearing the mastermind behind the details that create the ambiance just further enriched the space. Taking a particular interest in the history of the prohibition gangsters, David infused creative elements to aid in the story of a 1920’s speakeasy. My personal favorite detail throughout the space are the fake $100 bills and diamonds glassed in on the top of aligning whiskey barrels which symbolize how the gangsters, of that era, would pay of their booze and women. In addition, they always play jazz and period inspired music to further captivate your experience in a 1920’s speakeasy. Barrel 51 (a private room you can rent) is where you will find a nook with a wanted poster of Al Capone and a Tommy Gunn encased behind bars; the amount of detail that went into transforming this space is breath taking.

The Laird Arcade Brewery (L.A.B)

This is Tiffin’s first brewery since prohibition. The owners take pride in ensuring all ingredients used for each craft beer come from Seneca County. Primarily creating ales, L.A.B also has an IPA, seltzer and continue to create new flavors. I personally appreciated that it was located down a hallway (view in video), making it feel more like a L.A.B. They also put a lot of thought into the details throughout the space including test beakers, lab cabinets under the bar and large valve pipping to aid in the story of being a L.A.B. Plus, Tiffin has DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) in the downtown area so you can take your beer to go.

Restaurants

Bailiwicks Coffee Company

No visit to Tiffin, Ohio is complete without a coffee from Bailiwicks. The space is fantastic. Plenty of areas to be tucked away in your own corner and sink into a project. What keeps me coming back is their monthly themed menus. I am not a “frou-frou” coffee drinker but I always indulge in a fun themed brew from Bailiwicks. Being a huge 80’s movie fan I was “geeking” over the new drink selections. I decided to go with “The Bueller;” which had white chocolate and cherry.

Jolly’s Drive In

I am a sucker for anything homemade. Jolly’s root beer is the sweet treat that quenches your thirst. They also have many of your drive-in classics including hot dogs, sandwiches and other favorite snacks and treats.

This American Bistro is a great place to enjoy a nice dinner. They are always changing up their menu. The atmosphere is the best part of this experience. Think lounge meets industrial in terms of interior design. Live entertainment on the baby grand piano and classic drinks to compliment your entrees.

Shops

22 Mrkt

This music and movie storefront is fairly new to Tiffin. In fact, they celebrate their 1 year this month (September 2020).  This record store carries vinyl and cassettes; great place to get those hard to find artists and albums. I really liked how they added records to the top of the window. It is that interior reminder that you are in a music lovers paradise.

Kesler & Co.

Newest addition to the downtown area, Kesler & Co. is full of fashionable items that are uniquely picked with every body type in mind. Owner Chelsea Lonsway, was inspired to start her own online clothing boutique with fashion that makes every woman feel confident in her body. Now in a storefront, Chelsea continues her mission and helping women find the perfect outfit.

Simply Susan’s

Whether you are looking for personalized gifts, adorable home décor or delicious treats, Simply Susan’s is your go to place for unique items. Their dark chocolate covered Oreos are the reason I make my stop in every trip to Tiffin.

Farmers Market

Every other Saturday, Downtown Tiffin hosts their Seneca County Farmers Market. Check out their Facebook page to look for upcoming dates.

From themed dinning to unique storefronts this location is loaded with hidden gems. There is so much you can do in a day in Tiffin, Ohio. Your next day trip I hope you consider this charming town.
