Fun Trips a Car Ride Away

Sometimes you just need a weekend to recharge and get away. The really cool thing about living in Toledo is how close we are to several different locations that can satisfy our inner explorer. Depending on the amount of time you have determines where you will travel to.

Here are my top weekend getaway spots:

Day Trip

Ann Arbor, MI: This is a great place to get away from everyday home life but still make it to your own bed at night. With unique restaurants, boutiques and wineries this is a great day trip.

Detroit, MI: This city offers a variety of experiences. I mainly come here for the nightlife, concerts and special events. Be sure to check out the North American International Auto Show. I really enjoyed this event, even though I am not a 'motor head'. If you are unsure about an auto show click here on reasons to go.

Cleveland, OH: Theater, sports and music; what more could you want. If I am not visiting here for a Playhouse Square event I am either attending a concert or at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I love this museum; if I could, I would live there.

Overnight

Ohio Amish Country: This consists of Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek, Berlin, Millersburg and other towns. There is so much to do here between the flea market, cheese factory, Warther Museum, restaurants, beautiful scenery and the World's Largest Cuckoo Clock. Most places close at 5 p.m. so staying the night is a great way to get a head start on the activities.

If you are looking for a romantic setting check out Inn at the Honey Run. This place has so much to do on site you may want to plan your stay for the whole weekend.

Geneva, OH: Imagine you are watching the sunset on the lake with a local vineyard delicacy in hand. Geneva has several wineries and they host a whole festival dedicated to their wine titled The Grape Jamboree. They have great resorts equipped with packages for any occasion. My personal favorite is The Lakehouse Inn, they have discounts, themed packages and add-on's to make your getaway special.

Put In Bay, OH (PIB): You can make this a day trip but staying the night is the best way to go. Take the Jet Express or Miller Ferry out to PIB in the morning and enjoy the island life. My favorite bar is The Roundhouse Patio Bar. This is located on the main strip but doesn't get too much traffic; your drinks will be served ASAP.

Why spend a huge amount of money on a place you are going to rest your head? Check out The Park Hotel for your next visit. It is located downtown, is reasonably priced and I use to work there! As far as the food I could take up a whole blog post, which is coming soon. Check out Put In Bay on City Surge.

All weekend

Pittsburgh, PA: This is around a 4 hour drive. While you could do 1 night I recommend doing 2. The city is such a fun unique experience. One side is upscale and all business and across the bridge you are in the heart of the city. I loved visiting when I auditioned for American Idol. While you could stay in a hotel I recommend Airbnb; this will give you a more organic local experience.

Chicago, IL: This is about 5 hours away; all weekend is a must. I have visited this city a couple of times and can't wait to go back. This city is by far my favorite to visit. The arts are vibrant, the history is alive and the jazz is everywhere. My favorite thing to do is visit The Science and Industry Museum. One thing you have to do is visit Millennium Park.

Take some time and go check out one of these great destinations. Whether you are getting away for a couple hours or for an extended weekend I hope you have safe and wonderful travels.
