If a picture is worth 1,000 words imagine what 24 frames per second could say. Video is my favorite way to story tell. Whether I am making a promo for an upcoming event or showing you my life struggles, I am utilizing video to tell #hayliestory. Several of my blogging friends have expressed interest in using video for their website but fear they lack editing skills. I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is editing isn’t that hard as long as you have a vision for the story you are trying to tell. The bad news is if you can’t film no amount of editing will fix that. I use my phone for everything from filming to editing and uploading. Here are the 5 apps I use to tell my story.
This app reminds me of power point. You use slides to transition from frame to frame. What you can do:
- Trim clips in app
- Layer text or picture on a video clip
- Choose from pre-loaded music beds or your own music.
- Various themes to choose from
- Has voice over capabilities
The limitations on this is the time restraint per slide. This app best serves the purpose of promotions for upcoming events and small businesses. I think an independent consultant could use this for their upcoming parties and any sales their company is having.
If you are somewhat familiar with the desktop version then clip will be a piece of cake. What you can do:
- Trim clips in app
- Duplicate clip
- Change cinematic filter
- Use pre-loaded music beds or your own music
- Change the speed to make slower
- Add title slides
- Upload to desktop for further editing process
The limitations of this is not being able to use different transitions on each clip and a limited selection in the pre-loaded music beds. I think this is great for scenic videos or jump cuts.
This app is great if you are wanting to add special effects. Although this app is more for creating a single clip oppose to editing several clips I still think it is a great tool to make your video to stand out. The limitation on this would be having to hold the button when recording, like Snapchat. This is a fun tool for updating social media feeds or your stories on Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram.
I had to download this app for my Osmo Mobile and I fell in love with all I could do with it. Unlike the previous programs you don’t have nearly as many limitations. What you can do:
- Wider selection of music beds
- Can use different transitions for each clip
- Edit in the program
- Add limited special effects
- Speed up or slow down clip
- Reverse the clip
The limitations of this app is not being able to import 4K, duplicate clips in the project and the output process. I have spend an hour trying to output a minute long clip; it was a struggle. I often use the other apps and upload those clips into this app. If you are looking for more flexibility and special effects then this app is great to use.
I just discovered this app from String Nguyen on LinkedIn. For all the video storytelling and content creating I love to do this app is by far my favorite. What you can do:
- Upload highlights of your clips prior to the editing
- Trim and/or cut clips
- Use different transitions per video clip
- Add title slides
- Use pre-loaded music beds or own music
- Can add 2 music tracks under the clips
- Voice over capabilities
The only limitation I have found so far is that you can’t layer clips like you would on a desktop. Otherwise this apps layout is very similar to a project or editing series you would see on a desktop. I love that I can use 2 different music beds and a voice over; how cool! You can do just about anything with this app; commercial, social media, promo or vlogging this is a great tool.
Be sure to tune in to my LinkedIn for the next 5 Tuesdays starting 8/29/17 to see how to edit in these apps. Now you can take your desired clips and edit them into the fabulous content you wish to share with the rest of the world. I hope you found this post useful for your own ambitions. Comment below with which app you think you will use.
