The Power of Believing

If I have learned nothing else in my short life it’s ‘When You Believe Anything is Possible’. Cliché, I know, but it is so true.  There are a couple of times, I can recall, when I put my power of belief to test.  One encounter sticks out the most to me. It had nothing to do with my career or in my relationship; it’s part of an ongoing joke.

Most individuals in my inner circle know that I am a Nick Jonas fan; they also know that I continuously joke about my future with him as his wife. Boarder line crazy but I will do what it takes to make someone smile. About 2 months prior to the Future Now tour I was drunk, with my boyfriend and mom, by the beach. I had this persistent sensation I had to go see Nick Jonas. I called my best friend, who was sober, and told her to buy tickets.

“Why can’t you?” She asked

“Because I am drunk and will most likely buy half the stadium.”

The day finally arrived and I boasted to everyone at work, for days, how Nick Jonas would promote me to VIP and propose to me at this concert. I was looking fly with my curly hair, make-up on point and of course a hot pink tank to stand out.

We arrive to the concert and hand our tickets to the usher. He flashes his light on the numbers and informs us that our row doesn’t exist. I look to my friend in panic.

“Did you scalp these tickets?”

“No, I don’t know what is going on but I bought them straight from the Quicken Loans site.”

The usher marches us up the left isle and I immediately think ‘this is it… I am going to concert jail; I’m done for.’ The usher stops 1 row behind VIP, gestures down the row and says “your seats are all the way at the end, just keep going until you are by the gate.” Dumbfounded, we head down the row disrupting 20 people. We reach our seats by the gate and we are right next to the cat walk.

THIS NEVER HAPPENS! We went from being in section 6 row WWW seats 12 and 13 to section 2, row B seats 18 and 19. I could grab Nick Jonas butt if I wanted to, however, the security guard was really big.

What does this have to do with believing?

Even though it was a joke I kept repeating how Nick Jonas would promote me to VIP and propose. VIP and the ring didn’t happen but I did get promoted from a mediocre floor seat to row 2 next to the cat walk! My point is: if you believe, it will happen and here are some steps to do just that.

“Repeat after me.”

Repetition is the only way to make your goals clear and keep you focused. Whatever your ambition repeat it over and over. In my case I was going to be promoted to a new seat and it happened. Here are some other ways to use this technique:

Body Image: Do you ever get in a slump, like you can’t lose weight, and call yourself fat? You probably repeat to yourself this negative view which doesn’t promote progress.

**Try This: Tell yourself all the things your body can do and repeat this everyday. Not only will you feel better about yourself you will appreciate the things your body can do and strive to maintain that strength.

Career Aspirations: Saying “I have no chance” or “I’m not good enough” will only hinder your confidence and drive you to unfulfilled potential.

**Try This: Start by what you are good at and how you can grow those strengths. Through this you will discover what you are passionate about. Repeat these skills to grow and you may find that what you thought you were meant to do can’t compare to your true calling.

Self Worth/Relationships: Much like body image, when we continue to be negative to ourselves we start to believe it. “We accept the love we think we deserve” Perks of Being a Wallflower.

**Try This: Tell yourself you are good enough. Make a list of all the things you are proud of yourself for doing and if you can’t come up with it on your own ask a friend. Better yet, make a list of things you want to do and cross them off. For example: go to gym, take bubble bath, read the newspaper. These are great things to get in habit of and crossing things off the list will make you feel more accomplished.

“When you see the path you know where you are headed”

Envision and revision your vision (ok, you get the point.) Have a vision for yourself. My vision is to become a travel channel personality, like Samantha Brown, and have a family. Because I have a set goal I know the steps I have to take to in order to get there.

Inspiration: Some people have really bad imaginations and that is ok. Sometimes you have to physically see what your life could be in order to be focused.

**Try This: Make a vision board. This is a creative outlet that lets your mind get focused on your desires in life. This doesn’t have to just be career oriented. If you are planning a wedding put your dream location, color scheme and dress on there. Want to get out of debt? The vision board can do that too. HuffingtonPost  has a great article on why they work.

Motivation: Although the saying is “a picture is worth 1,000 words” it can still leave you speechless. Photos do not move me but being proactive does.

**Try This: Be like Nike and Just Do It! Make plans to complete tasks to achieve your goal. By making a list of things to do you are keeping your mind focus. Plus, by crossing tasks off, you are more likely to feel you are achieving something which only enhances the belief in yourself.

“Have Faith”

You do not have to be religious to have faith. Even if it is faith in the universe just knowing something is rooting for you will help you gain confidence and promote believing.

Pity-Party of 1: When you feel down on yourself or like nothing is going right it is easy to go into “pity party” mode and not accomplish anything.

**Try This: Go Volunteer! It can be at your church, at the gym you go to or on Volunteermatch.org where you can find a task related to your goals. Either way go socialize, realize your worth, get back on your horse and keep ridding.

Giving Up: You feel like you are over your head and wasting your time. It happens and can be really daunting but know you if weren’t passionate about it then you wouldn’t have done it in the first place.

**Try This: Take some quiet time to clear you head. Meditate, go for a run, do some yoga or even just pray to God. This will help settle some anxiety and clear you head so you can refocus your ambitions to your vision.

Even though it was a joke I got promoted to row 2 at the Future Now concert with Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato. From that moment on I have no doubts in what I am able to achieve by believing. When you believe, it happens. Believe in yourself, vision your goal and don’t let life get you down. You can do anything you set your mind to, you just have to believe you can do it.
